How to Remove Pet Stains the Natural Way

Pets- they're great companions, we love when they greet us at the door, and they always cheers us up when we are feeling down. But sometimes our furry friends have accidents. Even fully trained and housebroken pets slip up sometimes, especially if you are pet-sitting for a friend or family member and the animal is not used to his or her new environment.

When pets and children are in the house, its important to use natural carpet cleaning products and services that won't harm your animals or family. But pet stains on your carpet can be especially resistant when it comes to lifting them – and the odor can be rather unpleasant.

Whether it's “number one,” “number two,” or blood, here are some safe solutions that can treat the stains and address odor problems. Please bear in mind that when you use any product to clean your carpet it is essential that you test the solution in an inconspicuous area before you go ahead and tackle the stain.

For blood and urine stains, a combination of vinegar and baking soda works especially well. Baking soda does a good job removing odor, as does vinegar, so using the following solution offers this added bonus:

Combine two cups of lukewarm water, two cups of white distilled vinegar, and four heaping tablespoons of baking soda, and pour it into a spray bottle. For fresh stains, do a thorough job of blotting up the mess. Fold an old rag you don't need anymore, place it on the problem area, put a heavy book on top of the rag, then actually stand on the book. This will greatly simplify the cleaning you will need to do. Spray the affected area with your solution, let it sit for five minutes, then gently rub and blot the stain with a soft cloth.

Here is another way to tackle stains with baking soda and vinegar:

Blot the stain as described above, then sprinkle the baking soda on the area after combining the water and vinegar only. Then, pour the water and vinegar solution directly on to the baking soda. Let this sit for five minutes, then blot the area and rub it with a soft cloth.

Club soda can be effective on fresh pet stains and old. However, it works its wonders only while it is effervescing, so you might need to apply it to the stain several times. Blot the stain then pour a bit of club soda on to the pet stain. Once the fizzing stops, repeat the process. If the stain is not fresh, you may have to follow up with some baking soda.

For light colored carpets, bleach may be an effective solution. With bleach, it is especially important to test this treatment in an inconspicuous area before proceeding. Mix ten parts water with one part bleach and pour it into a spray bottle. Spray the pet stain, allow the solution to sit for fifteen seconds, and blot with water.

Finally, for dried, resistant pet stains, moisten the area before treatment. Mix a quart of water with a stain fighting laundry detergent. Pour this solution into a spray bottle. Allow the mixture to soak for a few minutes, then blot, rinsing with warm water and repeating as necessary.

With pets and families, these environmentally friendly treatments will ensure that everyone remains happy and healthy.
