The American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) is the oldest national youth soccer program in the United States. Founded in 1964 in Torrance, California, with nine teams, the organization has grown into a nationwide organization with more than 500,000 players and 50,000 teams. It also organizes youth soccer tournaments.
In the organization's early years, the American Youth Soccer League had many challenges. It struggled to find players, fields, and financial support. It was also plagued by racism. Fortunately, its supporters eventually gathered together to form the Southern California Junior Soccer League. The name of the organization is derived from that league. It is now one of the oldest youth soccer leagues in the country. Its origins are in Torrance, California, which is home to the U.S. American Ladies Soccer Association, the Los Angeles Galaxy, and the Torrance-based FC.
AYSO has local programs in all fifty states, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Trinidad and Tobago. Volunteer volunteers run regional programs, but the national office employs 50 paid staff to support these programs. Its headquarters is located at 19750 South Vermont Ave. in Torrance. The organization's president is Michael Karon. Vice presidents of the organization's national office are Dan Howald, Maurice Miranda, and Eileen Tabert.
Besides promoting soccer, AYSO has developed many important programs and concepts for young athletes. For example, the famous "Everyone Plays" program ensures that all players get at least half of the playing time in each game. Another valuable program is the Very Important Player (VIP) program. This program was specifically designed for players with disabilities. AYSO currently funds the program, and over 3,700 players participate in it.
AYSO teams are made up of players of different skill levels. This allows players to play with teammates of different levels, thereby fostering better skills and a positive attitude. In addition, coaches are encouraged to encourage their players to give their best effort, which ultimately leads to greater motivation and enjoyment. AYSO teams also strive to form a team that is evenly matched and not a top-down structure.
